Ultimate Guide: How to choose the perfect artificial grass (and not lose your mind in the process)

You’ve made the decision: you want a green, flawless garden that doesn’t steal your weekends. But then you open a catalog and find dozens of models, heights, and prices. Are they all the same? Absolutely not.

Choosing the right artificial grass is the difference between having a plastic carpet that shines too much and having an oasis that fools even the most expert eye. Here are the 4 keys to making the right choice.

1. Pile height: What will you use the floor for?

Height isn't just about aesthetics; it defines functionality. Think about how the area will be used:

  • Between 20mm and 25mm: The "warrior" for terraces, balconies, and commercial areas. It’s very easy to clean, more affordable, and stands up wonderfully to heavy foot traffic without flattening.

  • Between 30mm and 35mm: The "sweet spot." This is the standard for family gardens. It offers the perfect balance between softness and the ability to bounce back after being stepped on.

  • 40mm or more: Pure luxury. If you’re looking for a hyper-realistic visual effect and a soft, cushioned feel (ideal for lounge areas with low traffic), this is your size.

2. "Memory Effect": The key to avoiding a flat lawn

Can you imagine moving your garden table only to find the marks are there forever? To avoid this, look at the shape of the fiber. Quality turf isn't flat; the fibers have cross-sections shaped like a "C", "W", or "U". These shapes act like an invisible spring, helping the fiber return to its vertical position on its own after someone walks on it.

3. Drainage capacity: Goodbye to puddles!

If you’re installing the grass near a swimming pool or live in a rainy area, this is non-negotiable. A good lawn should be able to evacuate at least 30-40 liters of water per minute per square meter. Make sure the backing has the necessary drainage holes so your garden doesn’t turn into a swamp.

4. Realism is in the mix (and the shine)

Stay away from turf that is just one solid, intense green color; they look like something out of a cartoon.

  • Multi-tone: Look for models that mix at least 3 or 4 shades (lime greens, olive greens, and curly brown or beige fibers that mimic the root).

  • Matte finish: High-end artificial grass has a matte finish. If it shines too much under the sun, it will look like cheap plastic.

Expert Tip: Before deciding, always ask for a sample. Place it on the ground (not on a table), look at it from a distance, and touch it with your bare feet. It should feel pleasant, not prickly.
