Artificial Grass and Calima: How to Clean Mud and Summer Storms Step by Step

Summer brings wonderful things, but it also treats us to two phenomena very typical of this season in Spain: sudden thunderstorms and episodes of calima (that fine Saharan dust in suspension). When the two join forces, the result is the famous "mud rain," which can coat your beautiful garden in a brown, disheartening layer within minutes.

If this has just happened to you, do not panic! One of the biggest advantages of synthetic turf is that mud does not ruin it. Today, we bring you a quick and very simple guide to make your lawn look radiantly green again in record time and with zero hassle.

Step 1: Remove Dry Leaves and Large Debris

Summer storms are usually accompanied by strong gusts of wind that litter the garden with leaves, twigs, or dry flowers from nearby plants.

• The Key: Before getting the ground wet, use a plastic-tined rake or a garden broom to clear away all coarse debris while dry. If you try to wash the mud away with the leaves still there, you will end up creating a thick paste that is much harder to remove. Never use metal rakes, as they could tear the fibers.

Step 2: The High-Pressure Hose-Down (Your Best Ally)

Unlike natural grass, where water and soil create a permanent muddy quagmire, artificial turf has an spectacular drainage capacity.

• The Key: Connect your garden hose and, using a high-pressure nozzle setting (such as a jet or spray gun), sweep the dust and mud away from the highest areas or those closest to the house toward your drainage points or lawn edges. You will see the brown layer dissolve instantly as the dirty water filters through the backing perforations without pooling.

Step 3: What If the Mud Has Already Baked in the Heat?

If the storm caught you while you were away and the blazing summer sun has petrified the mud onto the fibers, the process changes slightly.

• The Key: Do not scrub it dry. First, thoroughly wet the entire surface with water to soften the hardened crust of dirt. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then apply the pressurized hose down. If you notice any stubborn patches remaining (especially from trodden-in spots), gently scrub with a stiff plastic-bristled brush and a small amount of neutral soap diluted in water. It will look brand new.

Step 4: The Final Brushing to Lift the Fibers

Once the grass is free of dirt and completely clean, it is normal to notice the fibers looking a bit matted or flattened due to the weight of the water and mud they have endured.

• The Key: Wait for the lawn to dry completely. After that, run a power brush designed for artificial grass or a manual stiff-bristled broom against the grain (in the opposite direction of the fiber lean). This will redistribute the infill silica sand at the base and lift the yarns back into their upright, cushiony position.

Do you have a pool? If mud has splashed from pool copings or natural flowerbeds, always clean from the inside (the clean zone) toward the outside to avoid dragging extra soil from the flowerbeds onto the grass you have already washed.
